The book starts off with a promising premise: a Mulan-like story of a girl who dreams of a life outside marriage, and who disguises herself as a man to achieve that. By the end of the book I got used to it, yet I still didn’t enjoy it as much as I would have liked to. I can read and not mind different kinds of romances, and yet this one felt off at first. One thing that I, weirdly, disliked was how the romance build up. I feel like we got to know her pretty well, from strengths to weaknesses and all that stuff, which of course translates to the author doing a good job with writing her characters. She’s hard-working and loves what she’s doing, and she values family above all.
Our main character, Maia, is very likeable. “Don’t become the kite that never flies.” There were certain aspects that made me not give this book a full 5/5 rating, but I’ll get to them later. I enjoyed the story and Lim’s writing style immensely, and I felt very immersed into the book from page one. I can’t recall who did the art for it, but I thank them for blessing us with such a masterpiece. It’s simply stunning and every detail on it amazes me.
